Next week, the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) will start. ADE is the world’s largest festival and business conference for electronic music and will take place in Amsterdam from October 17 until October 21. The program features concerts, talks and movie screenings covering the whole spectrum of electronic sub-genres.
ADE’s offer of events can be overwhelming and makes you wish you had the gift of ubiquity. If you have not succeeded yet in splitting yourself in two (or three, or four), The Amsterdammer is here to help! We propose 5 events you do not want to miss next week.
1. ADEV street parade
ADEV (“Amsterdam Danst Ergens Voor”, translated: “Amsterdam Dances For Something”) is the alternative city street parade, now at its sixth edition. ADEV is one of ADE’s unofficial events, and each year brings crowds into the streets of Amsterdam in order to rave and dance for alternative spaces in the city. It incites people to stand up for a city that recognizes the value of diversity, in both life and music. In 2017, ADEV danced for ADM, the Netherlands’ largest squatted community, which in the past few years has been repeatedly threatened by eviction. The Board of State has recently ordered squatters to leave before Christmas 2018. The parade will leave from Jonas Daniël Meijerplein on Saturday, October 20 at 1 p.m.
2. DGTL x Bonobo Pres Outlier
On Saturday 20, the Scheepsbouwloods at NDSM hosts the British DJ Bonobo and his Outlier project. Bonobo will play between 1.30 and 3.30 a.m. but the party will keep going until 7 a.m., so make sure you wear comfortable shoes. For this event, ADE started a new partnership with DGTL, the electronic and techno festival taking place in Amsterdam during the Easter weekend. 3. Rush Hour ADE ‘18 – Instores
Rush Hour record store in Spuistraat offers a DJ-set with DJ’s from all over the world spinning records at the store. Every day, from Wednesday until Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m. On Friday 19, music will play all day long (10 a.m. to 9 p.m.). Free entrance.
4. ADE Special @Lab111
Cinema LAB111 (Arie Biemondstraat 111) presents a wide array of documentaries and movies about, featuring or made by inspiring musicians from the electronic music scene. Among those, Raw chicks. Berlin (Beate Kunath, 2017) portrays eleven women from the wide-ranging Berlin electronic music scene. Ticket price: 9,50 euros. ADE Card holders receive free limited access (first come, first serve) and 10 percent discount at LAB111’s restaurant and 50 percent off Absolut cocktails. ADE card (15 euros) offers free or discounted entrance on a variety of concerts, events and screenings, and discounts on selected ADE merchandise.
5. ADE University
ADE University is an outreach program that aims to inspire and educate both Dutch and international students who hope to see themselves as music professionals in the future. It offers a program of interactive discussions, workshops and network sessions, featuring a variety of professionals eager to share their knowledge. This year, the main hub of ADE University will be the Generator Hostel (Mauritskade 57), where several talks and keynotes will be held throughout the day. On top of that, students can register for guided tours, talks and workshops at renowned music companies. The event is exclusively available for students.
