COURSE DESCRIPTION:
We all carry worlds inside of us that are begging to be released and expressed, whether on paper, through music or on a canvas. But where do we start? How do we dig deep into ourselves and finally find those inner worlds? How do we find the right voice to express them? In this creative writing workshop, participants will learn how to tackle the stories that lie deep within, how to play around with different writing techniques and hopefully get inspired to start writing that poetry collection or finish that novel that has been gathering dust in a corner.

In the first part of the workshop, I will guide you through different ways of approaching the process of writing. I will address topics such as memory, dreams and music, while attempting to show how these can influence your creative writing.

The second part of the workshop will be dedicated to exercises and to interactive practices. We will write and share our poems and stories. No previous experience in writing is required, just bring pen and paper and your imagination. If you feel more comfortable writing on your laptop, go ahead but the creative parts of our brain work better when we write by hand, trust me! If the workshop turns out to be beneficial and helpful, we could make it a regular event, with the aim of building a writing community where we will write and assess our work collectively.

ABOUT THE TUTOR:
The workshop will be led by Kate Shylo who is a postgraduate student in Comparative and Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam and former columnist at the Amsterdammer. In her academic and creative work, she explores issues surrounding memory, trauma, space and identity. Kate has been writing since early childhood. She published poetry and prose in different parts of the world such as Luxembourg, London and Cyprus.
